Creating Our Own Understanding
It is time to start thinking about your Final Unit Project. Begin by rereading the description given in the course syllabus. Your assignment is to create a lesson using the pieces given below based on the ASSURE Model* or another preferred lesson plan template. This is a practice run for your Final Unit Project.
In general, mastery learning experiences are broken up into small, discrete units based on a logical sequence. As teachers, we need to provide activities to students to practice their skills to attain mastery. Finally, we need to think about how we might assess our learning as a result of this lesson.
On your blog, plan a single lesson based on the ASSURE Model*. You may wish to include this lesson as part of your larger unit project, which will consist of several lessons. Use the steps below to help you- remember the goal is to practice lesson planning with this assignment.
A- Analyze Learners
1) General characteristics of learners- describe the age, gender, ethnicity, attitudes, interests of the class.
2) Specific entry competencies- what do they know about research & technology before you begin?
3) Learning style preferences- how do your students see, interact, and respond to the world?
Remember, since you are not in a classroom right now and don't have any students yet, you'll need to make this part up. If you cannot do that, here are data for sample elementary and secondary classrooms.
S- State Standards and Objectives
1) List the curricular and technology standards to be achieved. Use your Common Core State Standards and ISTE-S standards for this part.
2) Describe the learning objectives using the ABCD format:
S- Select Instructional Strategies, Technology, Media, and Materials
Here’s where you can use your creativity and internet sleuthing skills. This part will be different for each of you, depending upon how you approach this project. For example you might:
a. use a pre-made lesson (with appropriate citations) covering a section of a research process
b. link to a video that provides direct instruction
c. create your own presentation
d. use drill & practice software
e. find some other way to provide a level of instruction
U- Use Technology, Media, and Materials
Is there anything under S that requires you (the teacher) to preview or prepare anything? How will you provide the learning experience?
R- Require Learner Participation
How will learners demonstrate that they are actively involved?
How will you give feedback?
E- Evaluate and Revise
How will you measure student learning? For example, you might create a rubric that measures student proficiency and add it to your blog.
Be prepared to share your lesson with the class when we return.

- Audience- who is doing the lesson? (4th graders, freshman, etc)
- Behaviors- what are the students supposed to do?
- Conditions- under what conditions are the students supposed to do their behaviors?
- Determine- what is criteria for determining whether students have achieved proficiency?
